A Complete RFQ Checklist to Eliminate Pricing Discrepancies, Accelerate Turnaround, and Unlock Engineering (DFM) Cost-Down Opportunities.
All projects at Starwaymfg start with an RFQ, or request for quote. If customer RFQs lack full details, our team will be unable to work out accurate cost estimates and lead times. If you’ve received wildly different prices from suppliers, there’s a good chance they’re all making different assumptions from incomplete information.
To ensure our engineers can provide an itemized, firm quotation and DFM cost-saving review within 24 hours, please prepare the following technical deliverables:
| Information Category | Recommended Formats / Details | Engineering Impact & Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1. 2D Engineering Drawings | PDF (controlled drawing) with dimensions & tolerances | Defines critical dimensions, GD&T, thread callouts, surface roughness (Ra), material, finish and technical notes. |
| 2. 3D CAD Models | STEP (.stp), IGES (.igs), SolidWorks (.sldprt / .sldasm) | Gives true geometry and accurate flat patterns — the fastest path to a firm cut cost |
| 3. Material & Specific Grade | Such as AL6061-T6, SS304/SS316L, Q235B, 4140, Brass C360 | Dictates raw material cost, machinability ratings, cutting speeds, tool selection, and weldability. |
| 4. Surface Finishing & Coating | Anodizing (Type II/III), Powder Coating (RAL), Passivation | Establishes corrosion resistance and masking needs; plating thickness impacts pre-machining tolerances. |
| 5. Order quantity & Annual volume | Prototype (1-5 pcs) + Batch size (e.g. 500 pcs/lot, 5k EAV) | Determines production strategy: laser cutting vs. dedicated tooling, single vs. multi-cavity fixtures. Prototype vs. production changes setup, tooling, and per-piece price entirely |
| 6. Special Processes & Assembly | PEM press-fit fasteners, welding, pressure testing, sub-assemblies | Covers secondary value-added operations, custom fixture/jig requirements and dedicated in-process QC inspection points. |
| 7. Application / Function | Environment (temp, mechanical load, marine/chloride exposure) | Crucial for DFM engineering review, material optimization, and cost-down (see Case Study below). |
| 8. Target Lead Time & Schedule | Prototype due date, batch delivery schedule (Incoterms) | Secures raw stock supply lead times, outside processing allocations, and logistics booking. |
Some engineering procurement specialists hesitate to disclose where a part will be installed, assuming only dimensions matter. In reality, sharing your part’s operational environment is the single most effective way to eliminate over-engineering and capture substantial DFM cost reductions.
For marine applications, for example, we factor in seawater corrosion and recommend appropriate material grades.

Precision manufacturing starts with clear inputs. Whether you are validating a rapid prototype or optimizing unit costs for series production:
