Check Your Material and Sheet Thickness

Check Your Material and Sheet Thickness Our sheet metal laser cutting services start with the material. Check the limits below, then send your drawing for a grade, geometry and edge review.
MaterialGrades We Can ReviewCutting ThicknessWhat It Means for Your Project
Carbon SteelQ235, Q345, SPCC, SPHCUp to 25 mmSuitable for brackets, panels and structural parts. Specify corrosion protection and any subsequent welding or coating. Oxygen-cut edges may require oxide removal before powder coating or painting.
Stainless SteelSS201, SS304, SS316, SS430Up to 16 mmFor stainless steel laser cutting, select the grade around the service environment, appearance and joining requirements. Identify visible surfaces and specify any brushing, polishing or passivation needed after fabrication.
Aluminum5052, 5083, 5754, 6061Up to 12 mmFor aluminum laser cutting, review the alloy and temper together with any subsequent bending. For parts with cosmetic surfaces, specify which faces require protection and the intended finish.
Brass & CopperH62/H65 brass; copper grades reviewed individuallyReviewed by grade and drawingSend the exact material designation, thickness and intended use. Cutting feasibility, edge requirements and any subsequent forming or finishing are reviewed for the project.
Reference maximums only; the cutting range for your grade and geometry is confirmed during drawing review.
Check the Requirements That Affect Your Part ✔ Material grade and condition
Specify the full grade and, where applicable, the temper or hardness. If your drawing uses an overseas material designation, any proposed alternative will be reviewed with you before production.
✔ Thickness and available stock
State the required thickness and its tolerance. If the specified thickness differs from available stock, we will discuss the options with you before proceeding.
✔ Holes, edges and critical dimensions
Mark critical holes, mating features and edge requirements on your drawing. Tight-fit holes may require drilling or reaming after laser cutting.
✔ Bending, welding and surface finishing
Include subsequent operations in your RFQ. Material selection, cut-edge preparation and surface protection should be reviewed as part of the complete manufacturing route. Cutting Tolerances Depend on Thickness and Features For sheet up to 3 mm thick, the standard cutting tolerance is ±0.1 mm. For thicker plate, allow ±0.2 mm or more, with the applicable tolerance confirmed during drawing review.
Hole diameters tend toward the minus side of the tolerance, while outer profiles tend toward the plus side. Identify critical fits so we can review cutting compensation and any secondary machining required. Need Help Confirming Your Material and Thickness? Send your drawing with the material grade, thickness, quantity and required finish. Include any bending, welding or assembly requirements so we can review the complete part.

Laser Cutting vs Wire EDM Which Is Best for Your Project?
Comparison FactorLaser Cutting (Fiber)Wire EDM
Process MechanismThermal cutting via focused laser beam.Electrical discharge erosion via thin charged wire (no contact).
Typical Tolerance±0.05 – ±0.1 mm±0.005 – ±0.02 mm
Material ThicknessThin–medium sheets (0.5–25 mm).Thick / hard blocks (up to ~300 mm).
CostLower per part (sheet production).Higher per part (slow process).
Geometry CapabilityComplex 2D profiles, intricate patterns.Complex 2D profiles in thick / hard materials.
Edge QualitySmooth, minimal burr; small HAZ.Excellent edge quality, no thermal stress.
Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ)Small but present.Effectively none (cold process).
Production SpeedVery fast for sheet metal nesting.Slow (mm/min range).
Material WasteLow (CAM nesting).Minimal (kerf only).
Typical MaterialsCarbon steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, copper.Any conductive material — hardened tool steel, carbide, Inconel, titanium.
Ideal Use CaseSheet metal panels, enclosures, structural parts.Tool & die, precision punches/dies, turbine slots.
